Katy Cruel - Vivien Zeller & Holger Saarmann (Trad. USA) - Ausschnitt

Ein rätselhaftes Lied, das mich begleitet, seit ich es auf einer "Best-of"-Platte von Joe Dassin fand. Ich recherchierte nach Varianten und fügte daraus meine eigene, längere Version zusammen. Katy bleibt für mich ein rätselhafter Charakter, vor allem wenn es in einer der Varianten von ihr heißt:

"Eyes as bright as coal and lips as bright as cherry, and 'tis her delight to make the young folks merry."

Der Website contemplator.com, einer hervorragenden American-Folksong-Sammlung im Internet, entnahm ich, daß dieses Lied aus der Kolonialzeit stammt und von amerikanischen Truppen während des Bürgerkrieges gesungen wurde. Es war Kinder- und Soldatenlied, Schlaf- und Klagelied. Der Text ist verwandt mit den schottischen Liedern "Licht Bob's Lasie","Aye Waukin' O" und "I know where I'm going" (siehe unten).

Eine Duo-Version singe ich mit der Geigerin Vivien Zeller in unserem Amerika-Programm "Lieder, so deutsch wie der Wilde Westen".

This song is said to date back to colonial times and was supposedly sung by American troops during the Revolutionary war. It was sung to several tempos. Troops marched to the tune, children skipped to it and women sang it as a lullaby and lament.

Though the origins of the song are mysterious, the text is often linked to the Scottish songs "Licht Bob's Lassie" and "Aye Waukin' O". It is sometimes also considered part of the family of songs that include "I Know Where I'm Going" and the words have been sung to that tune.
